Letter of Apostle Paul – Romans
An Intimate Review
Pt 7
By Lawrence DeMetrius

Alive In Jesus Christ and Dead to the Power of Sin

In [Rm 6:1-3] Apostle Paul admonishes those who are now ALIVE in Christ to know that they are so because of their FAITH in THE LORD, Christ the Word and living a life of righteousness. In Yahweh’s perspective, they are dead to the power of sin from the moment they were BAPTIZED into the DEATH of Jesus Christ.

*baptized Gk #907 baptizo (bap-tidzo) it means to…

o submerge, cover or bury beneath a mass of something like floodwaters, an avalanche or debris

*death Gk #2288 thanatos (than-at-os) it is death, which is…
• the act of dying, end of life and permanent cessation of all vital functions
• extinction, destruction, manner of dying and state of being dead

In [Rm 6:4-11] Apostle Paul links new LIFE to Christ’s resurrection. He notes that the evidence of Christ’s resurrection is expressed through the lifestyle of the redeemed, which is praise unto Yahweh. The Elect of GOD are to live in newness of LIFE by the same GLORY that resurrected Christ from the DEAD. THE LORD does not expect them to do so by their own mortal strength as it is always weak. They can only do so through the strength of Christ. [Mt 26:41; Jn 15:5; Rm 7:25; II Cor 12:9]

*glory Gk #1391 doxa (dox-ah) it is very apparent…

• praise, which is the…
o state and act of expressing approval and admiration
o offering of grateful homage in words and song as an act of worship

• worship, which is…
o reverent honor and homage to Yahweh or a sacred personage
o formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage
o adoring reverence or regard and the object thereof

Here, Apostle Paul is specifically referring to the GLORY of THE LORD, which is the only means by which one can live in newness of LIFE. It is the means by which Yahweh expects born-again believers to embrace for themselves. This is why divine worship is not possible without daily renewal of mind with HIS Word and willingness to deal with self realistically. [St Jn 4:23, 24; Rm 12:1-3] In [Rm 6:6] Apostle Paul notes that the BODY of SIN must be DESTROYED in order to effectively stop its service to SIN.

*body Gk #4983 soma (so-mah) it is the body as a sound whole and a slave

SOMA, in this passage is referring to the SLAVE that is bound to serve SIN and inherit The Second Death. It is the SLAVE that is subject only to the dictates of carnality and cannot be subject to divine rule. This is the SLAVE that is DESTROYED when one is BAPTISED into the DEATH of Jesus Christ and is reconciled to SOUND WHOLENESS in Yahweh. [Rm 8:5-7; 7:14-25]

*destroyed Gk #2673 katargeo (kat-arg-eh-o) it means to render entirely idle and useless

*serve Gk #1398 douleuo (dool-yoo-o) it means to serve, do service, be in bondage or be enslaved to
In [Rm 6:12, 19] Apostle Paul explains that just because one becomes liberated from the power of sin, does not mean sin does not exist, nor that one is no longer vulnerable to it. [Mt 6:34; Jm 1:13-15] Christ Himself teaches that whilst one’s born-again spirit is always willing to do what is right, their sin flawed mortal nature remains weak. [Mt 26:41] The Elect are instructed to let no SIN reign in their MORTAL BODY as it did before they inherited new LIFE in Christ.

*mortal Gk #2349 thnetos (thnay-tos) it means liable to die

*obey Gk #5219 hupakouo (hoop-ak-oo-o) it means to…
• hear under as a subordinate
• listen attentively and heed to
• conform to a command and authority

*lusts Gk # 1939 epitumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee-ah) it is a longing for what is forbidden

In [Rm 6:13, 16] Apostle Paul admonishes born-again believers to not YIELD their BODILY MEMBERS as INSTRUMENTS of UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. Instead, they are to YIELD them to Yahweh through faith filled obedience to Christ the Word and Lord of Righteousness.

*members Gk #3196 melos (mel-os) it is a limb and part of the body

*yield Gk #3936 paristemi (par-is-tay-mee) it means to…
• stand besides, exhibit and proffer
• specifically recommend, substantiate, be at hand and ready to aid

*instruments Gk #3696 hoplon (hop-lon) it is an implement, utensil, tool and weaponry to fight offensively in a war

By definition, to fight OFFENSIVELY in a military operation is to seek through an aggressive projection of armed forces to occupy territory, gain an objective or achieve some larger strategic, operational or tactical goal. In other words, it means to invade and attack, which is what Christ said His Church has been doing in the world governed by Lucifer, since the time of John the Baptist. Serving from the DEFENSIVE side of war is to defend and protect. [Mt 11:12]
Sons of GOD effectively fight evil OFFENSIVELY by simply doing what is right at all times, which is LOVE. By this they also effectively fight evil DEFENSIVELY, which protects the holistic wellbeing of self and others in their care. In [Rm 6:17, 18] Apostle Paul reiterates that LIBERATION from service to SIN to the service of RIGHTEOUSNESS was made possible because of Yahweh’s intervention. [St Jn 3:16-18, 36] Mortals obtain the benefit of this gratuity when they OBEY from the HEART the FORM of DOCTRINE that was DELIVERED unto them by Christ and His messengers. [Jn 8:31, 32, 36; Rm 10:8-10, 14, 15; II Tim 2:26]

*heart Gk #2588 kardia (kar-dee-ah) it is the heart and is figurative of thoughts, feeling, mind and middle

*form Gk #5179 tupos (too-pos) it is a…
• die as struck, stamp, scar and shape
• statue, style or resemblance
• sampler, type and model for imitation
• instance for warning

*doctrine Gk #1322 didache (did-akh-ay) it is that which has been taught, doctrine and the act and matter of instruction

*delivered Gk #3860 paradidomi (par-ad-id-o-mee) it means to surrender, yield up, entrust and transmit

There are innumerous DOCTRINES in the world. However, Apostle Paul is referring to BELIEVING and OBEYING the DOCTRINE that was specifically DELIVERED to born-again believers by Jesus Christ and His Original Apostles. [II Cor 11:3, 4; Gal 1:6-9; Jude vs 3; Rev 19:9-11] In [Rm 6:20-23] Apostle Paul reiterates the fatality of being enslaved to the power of SIN, as it only compensates with DEATH. He writes,

For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed: for the end of those things is death.
But now being made free from sin, and become servants of God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal through Jesus Christ our Lord.
[Rm 6:20-23]
