Letter of Apostle Paul – I Timothy
An Intimate Review
Pt 6
By Lawrence DeMetrius

In [I Tim 5:1, 2, 7, 17-20] Apostle Paul provides 12 WAYS in which Christians are to entreat one another in their domestic homes and local assemblies.

1. REBUKE not an ELDER, but INTREAT them as a FATHER. [I Tim 5:1a]

*rebuke (1) Gk #1969 epiplesso (ep-ee-place-o) it means to verbally chastise or upbraid, which is to…

3. Receive not an ACCUSATION against an ELDER, but before two or three witnesses. Them that sin REBUKE before all, that others may fear. [I Tim 5:19, 20]

*accusation Gk #2724 kategoria (kat-ay-gor-ee-ah) it is a complaint or criminal charge

*rebuke (2) Gk #1651 elegcho (el-eng-kho) it means to confute, admonish, convict, tell a fault or reprove

*fear Gk #5401 phobos (fob-os) it is alarm and fright

Though some may be more mature in Christ than others, no one is perfect. No doubt there are times when ELDERS do fall in their conduct or speech, just as the YOUNGER. It is also true that Lucifer and his subjects are always at work looking to bring ACCUSATION of wrongdoing against anyone, especially born-again believers. [Isa 54:17] However, Christians are admonished not to give place for them to do so within their homes and assemblies. [Eph 4:27] This is especially crucial when it comes to attempts of defamation toward honorable ELDERS who hold seats of high influence. Indubitably, such individuals have undergone many years of tests and trials to reach the level of spiritual maturity and service they attain. Their personal overcoming nurtures not only their own wellbeing, but that of many others who hear them. [I Tim 4:16] Thus, ACCUSATIONS made against them without proper evaluation and proof can serve as wicked devices purposed to hinder or destroy the WORK of the Holy Ghost through their lives. Those who practice FALSE ACCUSATION against an Elect servant of THE LORD can suffer great loss, sickness and death for doing so. Let one consider the experience of the Prophetess Miriam, Aaron’s sister. [Num 12]

King David writes,

…touch not MINE anointed, and do MY prophets no harm.
[I Chr 16:11]

4. Let ELDERS who RULE WELL be counted worthy of DOUBLE HONOR, especially they who LABOR in THE WORD and DOCTRINE. [I Tim 5:17]

*honor (2) Gk #5092 time (tee-may) it is value, valuables, money paid, esteem and dignity of the highest degree

*labor Gk #2872 kopiao (kop-ee-ah-o) it means to feel fatigue and work hard

*word Gk #3056 logos (log-os) it is…
• something said including the thought
• a topic or subject of discourse
• reasoning of the mental faculty
• a motive or computation which is a making sense of a thing
• the Divine Expression as Christ the Word

*doctrine Gk #1319 didaskalia (dod-as-kal-ee-ah) it is the function and information of instruction

In [I Tim 5:3-16] Apostle Paul offers clear counsel regarding the entreating of true WIDOW women.

1. HONOUR true WIDOWS. [I Tim 5:3]

*honor (1) Gk#5091 timao (tim-ah-o) it means to prize, revere and fix a valuation upon
*widow Gk # 5503 chera (khay-rah) it is a widow as lacking a husband…thus a woman

2. True WIDOWS are responsible for caring for their own children or children of their siblings are to SHEW PIETY at home first as this is good and acceptable to Yahweh. [I Tim 5:4a]

*shew piety Gk #2151 eusebeo (yoo-seb-eh-o) it means to be pious toward Yahweh, divine worship and to respect and support one’s parents

3. True WIDOWS are to REQUITE their parents for this is good and acceptable to THE LORD. [I Tim 5:4b]

*requite in English means to…
• make repayment or return for service and benefits
• make retaliation for a wrong or injury
• give and do in return

The LOVE and SUPPORT PARENTS showed toward their children is expected to be given in return in their ELDERLY years, when they need it. This is why it is important for PARENTS to show proper respect toward their children during their time of rearing. [Gal 6:7]

*parents Gk #4269 progonos (prog-on-os) it is an ancestor, parent or grandparent

4. Apostle Paul suggests that any person who fails to rightly provide for their own household has DENIED the divine FAITH and is worse than an INFIDEL. [I Tim 5:8]

*denied Gk #720 areneomai (ar-neh-om-ahee) it means to contradict, disavow, reject and refuse

*faith Gk #4102 pistis (pis-tis) it is…
• persuasion and credence
• moral conviction of religious truth, truthfulness of Yahweh and of a religious teacher
• reliance upon Christ for salvation and constancy of such profession
• the system of religious truth based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ

*infidel Gk #571 apistos (ap-is-tos) it means disbelieving, without Christian faith, an untrustworthy person and one who does not believe and is not credible, especially a heathen

5. Apostle Paul suggests that true WIDOWS are DESOLATE, TRUST in Yahweh, and CONTINUE in SUPPLICATION and PRAYERS all day every day. In other words, they are truly spiritual women who are wholly devoted to spiritual things. [I Tim 5:5]

*desolate Gk #3443 monoo (mon-o-o) it means to isolate and bereave

*trusteth Gk #1679 elpizo (el-pid-zo) it means to expect and confide

*continueth Gk #4357 prosmeno (pros-men-o) it means to stay further, remain in a place with a person, adhere to and persevere in

*prayers Gk #4335 proseuche (pros-yoo-khay) it means prayer and worship to Yahweh and a place to pray aloud as an oratory chapel

6. Apostle Paul suggests that true WIDOWS are to receive special relief if they are at least 30 years old and the wife of one man. [I Tim 5:9]

7. True WIDOWS must be WELL REPORTED of GOOD WORKS i.e., have reared children, lodged strangers, washed the feet of saints, relieved the afflicted and have diligently followed every GOOD WORK. In other words, these WIDOWS are not lazy women or women of leisure. This gives credence to the idea that aid purposed to be given to Christians in need, is not to be mishandled or randomly given to others just because they ask for or think they are entitled it. [I Tim 5:10, 16]

*well reported Gk #3140 martureo (mar-too-reh-o) it means to be a witness and to testify

*good Gk #2570 kalos (kal-os) it means beautiful, literally and morally good, valuable and virtuous for appearance and use
*works Gk #2041 ergon (er-gon) it is an act and toil as an occupation or effort

8. Apostle Paul suggests that women who LIVE in PLEASURE are DEAD while they LIVE. Thus, in his perspective, women who live to pacify their carnal desires are spiritually DEAD, which most might perceive the case for any mortal male or female. [I Tim 5:6, 9, 11-15; Mt 6:24, 33; Lk 8:14; 12:15; Rm 8:5-7; I Jn 2:15-17]

*liveth Gk #2198 dzao (dzah-o) it means to live, a lifetime, alive and lively

*pleasure Gk #4684 spatalao (spat-al-ah-o) it means to be wanton, live in pleasure or be voluptuous, which is…
• full of, characterized by or ministering to indulgence in luxury, pleasure, and sensuous enjoyment
• derived from gratification of the senses
• directed toward or concerned with sensual pleasure
• sensuously pleasing or delightful

*dead Gk #2348 thnesko (than-sko) it means to die or be dead

9. In Apostle Paul’s perspective, WIDOWS under the age of 30 were to be refused aid, because they are likely to become WANTON against Christ and MARRY again. While this may have been true for some young WIDOWS in his time, it is not certain that it was true for all young WIDOWS. [I Tim 5:11]

*wanton Gk #2691 katastreniao (kat-as-tray-nee-ah-o) it means to become voluptuous against

*marry Gk #1060 gameo (gam-eh-o) it means to wed of either sex or to marry as a wife

10. In Apostle Paul’s perspective, young WIDOWS who chose to MARRY again bring DAMNATION unto themselves and CAST OFF their first FAITH. But, he also later states in the same passage that they should re-marry. Clearly, he is expressing his personal opinions about young WIDOWS. While his opinion may have been true for some young WIDOWS of his day, it is not certain they were true for all of them. [I Tim 5:12]
*damnation Gk #2917 krima (kree-mah) it is the function and effect of a decision for or against a crime

*cast off Gk #114 atheteo (ath-et-eh-o) it means to set aside, disesteem, neutralize or violate

*first Gk #4413 protos (pro-tos) it means foremost in time, place, order and importance

11. In Apostle Paul’s perspective, young WIDOWS would eventually learn to be IDLE and WANDER from house to house becoming TATTLERS and BUSYBODIES and begin SPEAKING things which they ought not. In so doing, they would be turning aside to Lucifer. Again, while this may have been true for some in his time, it is not certain it was true for all YOUNG WIDOWS. [I Tim 5:13, 15]

*idle Gk #692 argos (ar-gos) it means inactive, unemployed, lazy and useless

*wandering Gk #4022 perierchomai (per-ee-er-khom-ahee) it means to come all around, stroll, vacillate or veer

*tattler Gk #5397 phluaros (floo-ar-os) it is a person who is garrulous, which means wordy and excessively talkative, especially about trivial matters

*busybodies Gk #4021 periergos (per-ee-er-gos) it means working all around, meddlesome, curious arts and magic

Per these definitions, those who SPEAK in this manner are being excercised by satanic forces as vessels of MAGIC, WITCHCRAFT and SORCERY without realizing it. Thus, GOSSIPING is a form of BEWITCHMENT that is devised to destroy mortal well-being.

*speaking Gk #2980 laleo (lal-eh-o) it means to talk or utter words

12. In Apostle Paul’s perspective, young WIDOWS should MARRY, have children, guide the HOUSE and give no occasion or room to Lucifer in SPEAKING reproachfully. Again, all suggestions given in [I Tim 5:6, 9, 11-15] are Apostle Paul’s opinions, which may have been true for some young WIDOWS of his day but not certain to be true for all of them.
