Letter of Apostle Paul – I Timothy
An Intimate Review
Pt 8
By Lawrence DeMetrius

In [I Tim 6:2c] Apostle Paul concludes his instruction to Pastor Timothy in regard to proper respect that is to be practiced within Christian assemblies and domestic homes. He then encourages Pastor Timothy to TEACH and EXHORT the given principles.

There are many TEACHINGS in the WORLD. Some of which SEEM right but lead souls upon the BROAD WAY to eternal DESTRUCTION. King Solomon writes,

There is way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
[Pro 14:12]

The Lord Jesus said,

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at.
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
[Mt 7:13, 14]

I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.
[Jn 14:6]
The only words that should be coming out of the mouth of a genuine Christian witness are those that EDIFY and ADMINISTER Yahweh’s GRACE to the spirit of the hearer. King Solomon writes,

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
[Pro 18:21]

Prophet Isaiah writes,

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
[Isa 50:4]

Apostle Paul writes,

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
[Eph 4:29]

In [I Tim 6:3] Apostle Paul emphasizes to Pastor Timothy, that the wholesome WORDS of our Lord Jesus Christ are the WORDS genuine teachers of Christ are to be CONSENTING to and with. CONSENTING to specific WORDS was also emphasized by Christ, Who declared that He only spoke what Yahweh instructed Him to. This was vital because it means eternal life to those who believe and obey them. [Jn 12:45-50] In [I Tim 6:4, 5] Apostle Paul describes those who TEACH OTHERWISE writing,

He is PROUD, KNOWING nothing, but DOTING ABOUT QUESTIONS and STRIFES OF WORDS, whereof cometh ENVY, STRIFE, RAILINGS, EVIL SUMISINGS,
PERVERSE DISPUTINGS of men of CORRUPT MINDS, and DESTITUTE of the TRUTH, supposing that GAIN is GODLINESS: from such WITHDRAW thyself.
[I Tim 6:4, 5]

*proud Gk #5187 tuphloo (toof-lo-o) it means to envelope with smoke and inflate with self-conceit, high-mindedness and be lifted up with pride

• Lucifer and his immortal and mortal subjects

• an act of suspecting and the state of mind or feeling of one who suspects
• an instance of suspecting something or state of being suspected
• imagination of anything to be the case or to be likely
• a slight trace, hint, suggestion or vague notion of something

*perverse disputing Gk #3859 paradiatribe (par-ad-ee-at-ree-bay) it is misemployment and meddlesomeness

• misemployment is to misuse, use improperly or for the wrong purpose
• meddlesomeness is to…
o involve oneself in a matter without right or invitation
o to interfere officiously and unwantedly

All the above refers to those who willingly partake in lying persuasions. They enjoy spending time ARGUING about POINTLESS issues instead of CONSENTING to wholesome principles that are provable, edifying and administer divine grace to the mortal spirit. Apostle Paul said that such people have CORRUPT MINDS, are DESTITUTE of the TRUTH and suppose that GAIN is GODLINESS. [Tit 1:16]

*corrupt Gk #1311 diaphtheiro (dee-af-thi-ro) it means thoroughly rotten, ruined, decayed and perverted

*minds Gk #3563 nous (nooce) it is the intellect, divine and human mind, feeling, will and understanding

*destitute Gk #650 apostereo (ap-os-ter-eh-o) it means to despoil, defraud and kept back by fraud

*supposing Gk # 3543 nomizo (nom-id-zo) it means to do by usage of law or custom, be usual, deem or regard

*gain Gk #4200 porismos (por-is-mos) it is furnishing, procuring, acquisition and money-getting

*godliness Gk #2150 euesbeia (yoo-seb-i-ah) it is piety and the Gospel theme, which is a subject of discourse, discussion, meditation, topic or composition

Again, all the above describe the INTELLECT and MINDSET of those who submit to the influence of lying persuasions. Because of their mentality and willingness to embrace lies, these people lack the ability to embrace divine truth. In [I Tim 6:5] Apostle Paul warns Timothy to WITHDRAW himself from FALSE CHRISTIAN TEACHERS having this CORRUPT and DESTITUTE MINDSET. One of the primary reasons why is because they promote WEALTH as an attribute of GODLINESS. Consistent ACQUISITION of temporal GAIN is what most mortals desire. Ecclesiastical and secular history proves that such desire, opportunity and TEACHING is increasing as the consummation of ages approaches. Vice versa, desire for TEACHING that generates spiritual regeneration and maturity in true GODLINESS is becoming less appealing, less received and loosely embraced by many hearts in the latter generations.

*withdraw Gk #868 aphistemi (af-is-tay-mee) it means to remove, desert, desist, depart, refrain or fall away from and instigate to revolt

Apostle Paul writes,

But godliness with CONTENTMENT is great gain.
[I Tim 6:6]

*contentment Gk #841 autarkeia (ow-tar-ki-ah) it is self-satisfaction, contentedness, competence and sufficiency

This is so because it prioritizes the assessment and benefit of true GODLINESS over possession of temporal GAIN. Having or desiring sufficient funds to secure what one requires for themselves and their family is not wicked. In fact, money is beneficial for what it can address in one’s life. [Eccl 7: 11, 12] It is the gift of Yahweh for one to enjoy the fruit of their labor, especially those who wholeheartedly trust in and obey HIM. [Eccl 2:24; 3:13, 22; Ps 37:3-5; I Tim 6: 17] However, avarice or excessive devotion for or to attaining money denotes idolatry and is the ROOT of every wicked practice on earth. [Exo 20:3; Mt 6:24, 33; I Jn 2:15-17] Thus, Apostle Paul writes,

And having food and raiment let us be therewith CONTENT.
[I Tim 6:8]

*content Gk #714 arkeo (ar-keh-o) it means to…
• ward off, avail and be satisfactory
• be content and enough
• suffice and be sufficient

This idea comes from Christ’s TEACHING regarding that which His brethren are to consider most valuable during their mortal lifetime. [Mt 6:24-34] Per Christ, the following are inclusive of such things.

1. The TIME in which one is allotted to live under the sun.
2. The HEALTH of one’s physical body and mind during their mortal lifetime.
3. The opportunity to be reconciled to, obtain and nurture intimate relationship with Yahweh, THE HEAVENLY FATHER. [Pro 8:17-21, 35, 36; II Cor 5:17-21; Heb 11:1, 6; Rm 2:7-11]

In [I Tim 6:9] Apostle Paul expounds upon those, including weak Christians, who embrace worldly principles of obtaining temporal abundance and have nothing to do with Christ’s admonishments. He writes,

But they that will be RICH FALL into TEMPTATION and a SNARE, and into MANY FOOLISH and HURTFUL LUSTS, which DROWN MEN in DESTRUCTION and PERDITION.
[I Tim 6:9]

*rich Gk #4147 plouteo (ploo-teh-o) it means to be or become wealthy, increased with goods, to make or wax rich

*temptation Gk #3986 peirasmos (pi-ras-mos) it is adversity and putting to proof by experiment of good, experience of evil, solicitation, discipline and provocation

*snare Gk #3803 pagis (page-ece) it is a trap as fastened by a noose or notch, a trick or stratagem

*lust Gk # 1939 epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee-ah) it is a longing, especially for what is forbidden [Mt 6:24; I Jn 2:15, 16]

*drown Gk #1036 buthizo (boo-this-xo) it means to sink or begin to sink

*destruction Gk #3639 olethros (ol-eth-ros) it is ruin, death and punishment

*perdition Gk #684 apoleia (ap-o-li-a) it is physical, spiritual and eternal loss
Per these definitions, excessive DESIRE for WEALTH can motivate one to do anything to get it, even at the risk of their holistic wellbeing. The gravest of such being neglect of their FAITH in THE LORD, HIS promises and ability to make all grace abound toward them in financial matters. From the most ancient of times, THE LORD has given what unbelievers labor for to HIS worshipers. King Solomon writes,

For God giveth to a man that is good in HIS sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner HE giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God.
[Eccl 2:26]

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his childrens’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
[Pro 13:22]

Apostle Paul writes,

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
[II Cor 9:8]

One can avoid the consequences of avarice by simply nurturing intimate relationship with Yahweh through Christ and the Holy Ghost and being CONTENT with what Yahweh has already given them. Apostle Paul continues his admonition to Timothy writing,

For the LOVE OF MONEY is the ROOT of all EVIL: which while some COVETED after, they have ERRED from the FAITH, and PIERCED themselves through with many SORROWS.
[I Tim 6:10]

*love of money Gk #5365 philarguria (fil-ar-goo-ree-ah) it is avarice, which is insatiable greed for riches and miserly and inordinate desire to gain and hoard wealth

*evil Gk #2556 kakos (kak-os) it means naturally worthless, corrupt, wicked, perverted and injurious

*coveted Gk #3713 oregomai (or-eg-om-ahee) it means to long for, reach out after and stretch oneself to

*erred Gk #635 apoplanao (ap-op-lan-ah-o) it means to lead astray or stray from truth

*faith Gk # 4102 pistis (pis-tis) it is…
• persuasion and credence
• moral conviction of religious truth, truthfulness of Yahweh or a religious teacher
• reliance upon Christ for salvation and constancy of such profession
• the system of religious truth based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ

*pierced Gk #4044 peripeiro (per-ee-pi-ro) it means to entirely penetrate, hold or fasten with something that pierces, make motionless with amazement, awe or terror

*sorrows Gk #3601 odune (od-oo-nay) it is grief that discourages and depresses hope and courage

All the above is what AVARICE does. Christ teaches about its destructive affect in His Parable of The Foolish Rich Man. [Lk 12:15-21] Christ and Apostle John warn that it leaves the heart void of love for Yahweh. [Mt 6:24; I Jn 2:15-17] AVARICE hinders full devotion to the work of Yahweh on earth. [Mt 19:16-26] Contrary to popular view, AVARICE deprives one of the benefits of abundant life and living offered by Christ Who said,

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
[Jn 10:10]
Apostle John writes,

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know HIM that is true, and we are in HIM that is true, even in HIS Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
[I Jn 5:20, 21]
