Letter of Apostle James
An Intimate Review
Pt 5
By Lawrence DeMetrius

In [Jam 2:14] Apostle James adds to avoidance of RESPECT OF PERSONS, the evidence of genuine FAITH expressed by GOOD WORKS. He writes,

What doth it PROFIT, my brethren, though a man SAY he hath FAITH, and have not WORKS? Can FAITH SAVE him?
[Jam2:14; 4:17; I Jn 5:17]

*profit Gk #3786 ophelos (of-el-os) it means to gain, which is to…
• get something desired, especially as a result of one's efforts
• acquire as an increase or an addition
• obtain as a profit

*say Gk #3004 lego (leg-o) it means to mean or lay forth in words, usually in a systematic or set discourse

*faith Gk #4102 pistis (pis-tis) it is…
• persuasion and credence
• moral conviction of religious truth, truthfulness of Yahweh or a religious teacher
• reliance upon Christ for salvation and constancy of such profession
• the system of religious truth based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ

*work Gk #2041 ergon (er-gon) it is an act or toil as an effort and occupation

*save Gk #4982 sozo (sode-zo) it means to…
• deliver, protect, heal and preserve
• save self, do well, be and make whole

Apostle James sheds light on the fact that one’s own FAITH is unable to SAVE him when it is void of WORKS. Christ teaches that one’s true nature will be disclosed by what they SAY and DO. [Mt 7:15-23]
While soul salvation is invoked by one’s heartfelt belief and verbal confession of the Risen Christ, evidence of spiritual rebirth is expressed per their character, conduct, speech and WORKS. [Jam 2:15, 17, 24, 26] The greatest of all GOOD WORKS is divine LOVE. [I Cor 12:27-31; 13] The practice of AGAPAOH LOVE is doing what is right, which destroys the power of evil. [Mt 5:43, 44, 46, 48; 22:37, 39; Rm 13:9, 10; I Jn 3:14-18; 4:7-21; 5:2, 3] In [Jam 3:1] Apostle James teaches about one’s desire to be recognized as a MASTER TEACHER. He writes,

My brethren, be not many MASTERS, knowing that we <master teachers> shall receive the greater CONDEMNATION.
[Jam 3:1]

*master Gk #1320 didaskalos (did-as-kal-os) it is an instructor

*condemnation Gk #2917 krima (kree-mah) it is the function and effect of a decision for or against something

One who holds the office of a MASTER TEACHER is accountable for communicating and adhering to the most accurate understanding of what they teach. This is why those who are called of Yahweh to teach HIS principles are admonished to be well versed therein. The office of a MASTER TEACHER should only be occupied by those who are truly called and qualified of Yahweh do so. In [Jam 3:2] Apostle James writes,

For in many things we OFFEND all. If any man OFFEND not in WORD, the same is a PERFECT man, and able also to BRIDLE the whole body.
[Jam 3:2]

*offend Gk #4417 ptaio (ptah-yo) it means to trip, err, sin and fail of salvation

*perfect Gk #5046 teleios (tel-i-os) it is completeness and complete in various applications of labor, growth, mentality and moral character

Apostle James notes that people in general do not always follow through as they should with one another. However, a person who is able to verbally communicate with others without OFFENDING them is proven to be MATURE in service, personal growth and character. [II Tim 2:24, 25; Gal 6:1-3]
As the Chief of MASTER TEACHERS, Christ always knew how to communicate much needed advice in a manner that did not OFFEND His listeners. Evidence of Christ’s awesome ability to communicate to unregenerate minds is noted per His interaction with marginalized and non-religious people. In all these occurrences Christ expressed His ability to communicate words of life in a non-offensive tone. He and all MASTER TEACHERS sent by Yahweh are taught of HIM to speak in this manner. [Isa 50:4; Jn 6:63] They are also equipped to BRIDLE their TONGUES and whole being.

*bridle Gk #5469 chalinos (khal-ee-nos) it is a curb or head-stall for curbing the spirit or mind

• curb, as a noun is a restraint and anything that restrains or controls
• curb, as a verb is to control, restrain and check

*body Gk #4983 soma (so-mah) it is the body as a sound whole, meaning spirit/seat of intellect, soul/seat of sentiment and the physical body [I Thes 5:23, 24]

Apostle James writes,

SPEAK not EVIL one to another, brethren. He that SPEAKETH EVIL of his BROTHER, and JUDGETH his BROTHER, SPEAKETH EVIL of THE LAW, and JUDGETH the LAW: but if thou JUDGE the LAW, thou art not a doer of the LAW, but a JUDGE. There is ONE LAWGIVER, WHO is able to SAVE and to DESTROY: who art thou that JUDGEST another?
[Jam 4:11-13]

*speak/speaketh Gk #2635 katalaleo (kat-al-al-eh-o) it means to be a traducer, slanderer and speak against

*brother Gk #80 adelphos (ad-el-fos) it is literally or figuratively a brother

*law Gk #3551 nomos (nom-os) it is…
• law through the idea of prescriptive usage and general regulation, and specifically the entire volume of Mosaic Laws
• figurative of a principle and the Gospel of Jesus Christ
*judge/judgeth Gk #2919 krino (kree-no) it means to…
• distinguish and mentally or judiciously decide
• try, condemn and punish

*judge Gk #2923 krites (kree-tace) it is a general or specific judge

*lawgiver Gk #3550 nomothetes (nom-oth-et-ace) it is a legislator, which is one who is a member of a legislative body that gives and makes laws

*destroy Gk #622 apollumi (ap-ol-loo-mee) it means to fully destroy, perish and lose

It is important to note that one who JUDGES usurps the position of a JUDGE, which only belongs to Yahweh. [Mt 5:22] In [Jam 4:13-16] Apostle James notes that it is wicked to SPEAK with assumption in regard to day-to-day anticipations. SPEAKING in general should also be done with regard to Yahweh’s WILL. [Mt 6:10, 34] Apostle James writes,

Go to now, ye that SAY, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a VAPOUR that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
For that ye ought to SAY, If THE LORD WILL, we shall live, and do this, or that.
But, now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Therefore, to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
[Jam 4:13-17]

*vapour Gk #822 atmis (at-mece) it is a mist

The mortal lifetime is but a MIST compared to the immortal lifetime. When Yahweh creates a mortal spirit, HE intends for that spirit to abide with HIM forever and ever. However, HE also creates them with free will. Thus, if they choose to practice a lifestyle of disobedience, they will suffer consequences for doing do so during both their mortal and immortal lifetimes. [St Jn 3:19, 36; Jude vs 6]

*will Gk #2309 thelo (thel-o) it means to…
• determine as an active option from subjective impulse
• wish or be inclined to do
• delight in per the Hebrew culture

Apostle Paul notes in his letter to the Saints at Rome that all things work together to benefit them who love Yahweh and are the called according to HIS purpose. [Rm 8:28] Thus, it is unlikely for THE LORD to WILL upon HIS worshiper that which does not benefit them. Christ teaches them to pray for THE FATHER’S WILL to be done in their lives on a daily basis. [Mt 6:13]
