Letter of Apostle Peter – I Peter
An Intimate Review
Pt 8
By Lawrence DeMetrius
In [I Pet 3:1-6] Apostle Peter expounds upon the role of Christians who choose to serve as a WIFE. He advises that women who are born-again can by their CONVERSATION win their UNBELIEVING HUSBAND to Christ writing,
Likewise, ye WIVES, be in SUBJECTION to your own HUSBANDS; that, if any obey not the WORD, they also may without the WORD be WON by the CONVERSATION of the WIVES;
While they behold your chaste CONVERSATION coupled with FEAR.

Apostle Peter reiterates that a CHASTE CONVERSATION COUPLED WITH FEAR, meaning proper respect towards one’s spouse, can WIN an UNSAVED SPOUSE to Jesus Christ. In [I Pet 3:2b-4] Apostle Peter emphasizes to born-again WIVES that their display of spiritual beauty is much more attractive than their natural beauty, which fades with time for both men and women. He writes,
Whose adorning let it not be that OUTWARD adorning of PLAITING the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of an apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a MEEK and QUITE spirit, which is in the sight of GOD of great PRICE.

In [I Pet 3:2b-6] Apostle Peter provides instruction on how to obtain the genuine interest and love of a HUSBAND who is worth of submitting to. Although women can command attention with their natural beauty, no beauty is more attractive than that of a born-again spirit. King Solomon, who owned many beautiful women as WIVES, likened beautiful women, who lack godly character to swine with a golden ring in its snout, which in his age and culture was an abominable thing.
[Pro 11:22] Per his observation, no matter how apparent the beauty of a woman is, if she lacks the TA’AM (ta-am), which in ancient Hebrew #2940 is the DISCRETION, TASTE, PERCEPTION, INTELLIGANCE and MANDATE of a woman who wholeheartedly worships and TRUSTS THE LORD, she is of no enduring value. [St Jn 1:11-13; 4:23, 24; Eccl 12:13] Apostle Peter then refers to holy women of ancient times writing,
For after this MANNER in the old time the HOLY women also, who TRUSTED in God, adorned themselves, being in SUBJECTION unto their own HUSBANDS: Even as SARA OBEYED Abraham, calling him LORD; whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not AFRAID with any AMAZEMENT.
[I Pet 3:5, 6]
*manner Gk #3779 houtos (hoo-tace) it refers to what proceeds or follows
*trust Gk #1679 elpizo (el-pid-zo) it means to expect and confide
*lord Gk #2962 kurios (koo-ree-os) it means supreme in authority, controller and Mr. as a title of respect
*afraid Gk #5399 phobeo (fob-eh-o) it means to frighten, be alarmed, be in awe of and revere
*amazement Gk #4423 ptoesis (pto-ay-sis) it is alarm in a negative sense
In [I Pet 3:7] Apostle Peter addresses the Elect of GOD who serve in the capacity of a HUSBAND. Born-again men are to be watchful in their interaction with certain women lest they fall prey as did Sampson to Delilah. [Jud 16] In so doing, they redeem themselves from being brought down by the charms of ungodly women. [Pro 11:22] Apostle Peter writes,
Likewise, ye HUSBANDS, dwell with them according to KNOWLEDGE, giving honor unto the WIFE, AS UNTO the WEAKER VESSEL, and BEING HEIRS TOGETHER of the GRACE of life; that YOUR prayers be not HINDERED.
[I Pet 3:7]
*dwell Gk #4924 sunoikeo (soon-oy-key-o) it means to reside together with as a family
*knowledge Gk #1108 gnosis (gno-sis) it is knowledge and the act of knowing
*honour Gk #5092 time (tee-may) it means value, a valuable thing that is paid for with money, dignity and esteem at the highest degree
Per these definitions, Apostle Peter gives credence to the idea of ONE MAN serving as HUSBAND to ONE WOMAN in MARRIAGE, per Yahweh’s directives on domestic affairs. He admonishes the HUSBAND to make his WIFE the most VALUED and ESTEEMED WOMAN in his life.
*weaker Gk #772 asthenes (as-then-ace) it means strengthless
*vessel Gk #4632 skeuos (skyoo-os) it is…
• a vessel, implement, equipment and apparatus
• specifically, a WIFE contributing to the usefulness of her HUSBAND
*heir Gk #4789 sugkleronomos (soong-klay-ron-om-os) it is a co-heir and participant in common
*grace Gk #5485 charis (khar-ece) it is…
• gratitude and graciousness as gratifying of manner and act
• divine influence upon the heart and its reflection in the life
*hinder Gk #1581 ekkopto (ek-kop-to) it means to frustrate, cut down, cut out, cut off and hinder, which is to…
• cause delay, interruption or difficulty in
• hamper and prevent from doing, acting or happening
• stop and be an obstacle or impediment
A consequence of ill-treatment toward one’s WIFE is HINDERED PRAYER. The Elect who serve as HUSBAND or WIFE are to acknowledge one another as HEIRS and CO-HEIRS of new life in Christ Jesus. [Rm 8:14-18] They are to STRENGTHEN and VALUE one another with esteem that is not ascribed to any other mortal in their lives.
