Lesson 66 of 77
Divine Tongues and Prophecy
{See Lessons 64, 65}
By Lawrence DeMetrius
As exemplified in the Holy Scriptures, unknown tongues that are divinely invoked, signify the divine unity and familial relationship established among those who have become the sons of Yahweh. Unknown tongues that are divinely invoked, also serve as a sign to unbelievers. Per Apostle Paul a sign in relation to unknown tongues is in the ancient Greek language Gk #4592 semeion (say-mi-on), which is an indication, especially ceremonially or supernaturally. Apostle Paul writes,
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
[I Cor 14:22]
The closest example of unknown tongues being a sign to those who hear them was exemplified in The Upper Room experience where a group of born-again believers were endowed with the Holy Ghost. In that instance, such unknown tongues were truly considered a wonder, because others who heard them clearly recognized their own native languages being spoken by individuals, they knew did not speak them. Not only was the phenomenon a wonder, but so too were the wonderful things being spoken of the praise, honor, and glory of THE LORD. Apostle Luke writes,
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews <practioners of Judaism>, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea and, Cappadociea, in Pontus, and Asia,
Phyrgia, Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews, and proselytes,
Cretes and Arabias, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
[Acts 2:1-13]
Per Apostle Paul, one who speaks in divinely invoked unknown tongues do so to edify only their inner person, especially when there is no divine interpretation of what is being spoken through their lips. Apostle Paul writes,
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
So likewise, ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For ye shall speak into the air.
Therefore, if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
[I Cor 14:2, 6, 9, 11, 19]
There is also the idea of speaking with new tongues, which refers to the speech and speaking of those who preach and teach on behalf of Christ the Messiah.
This is the work of Christian teachers, who have been purified by the fire of the Holy Ghost to proclaim the Gospel of God concerning HIS First begotten Son. The Lord Jesus said,
And these signs shall follow them that believe; …they shall speak with new tongues:
[Mk 16:17]
This is that same purification of tongue experienced by Prophet Isaiah who writes,
Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen THE KING, the LORD OF HOSTS.
Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
Also, I heard the Voice of the LORD saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for US?
Then said I, Here am I; send me.
[Isa 6:5-9]
The LORD God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: HE wakeneth morning by morning, HE wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
[Isa 50:4]
Just as there are divine tongues, prophets, and prophecies, there are also those that are false. The Lord Jesus said,
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit: but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruit ye shall know them.
[Mt 7:15-20]
Apostle John writes,
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
[I Jn 2:18, 19]
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: Because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is the spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is HE that is in you, than he that is in the world.
They are of the world: therefore, speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
[I Jn 4:1-6]
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
[II Jn vs. 7]
Prophecy is not only foretelling the future but is the ability to forth-tell or teach the Holy Scriptures effectively and accurately. This powerful gift serves to help born-again believers better understand the true meaning of divinely inspired words, provisioned by Yahweh through HIS scribes, prophets, and teachers, from Enoch to Christ and His Original Apostles. Enoch writes,
The second vision which he saw, the vision of wisdom – which Enoch the son of Jared, the son Mahalalel, the son Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, saw.
And this is the beginning of the words of wisdom which I lifted up my voice to speak and say to those which dwell on earth: Hear, ye men of old time, and see, ye that come after, the words of the HOLY ONE, which I will speak before the LORD OF SPIRITS. It were better to declare them only to the men of old time, but even from those that come after we will not withhold the beginning of wisdom.
Till the present day such wisdom has never been given by the LORD OF SPIRITS as I have received according to my insight, according to the good pleasure of the LORD OF SPIRITS by WHOM the lot of eternal life has been given to me.
Now three parables were imparted to me, and I lifted up my voice and recounted them to those that dwell on the earth.
[Eno 37]
Prophet Daniel writes,
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.
Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
[Dan 12:3, 10]
The Lord Jesus said,
These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me.
Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.
[Lk 24:44, 45]
If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
[Jn 8:31, 32, 36]
The book of Hebrews notes,
God, WHO at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by HIS Son, Whom HE hath appointed heir of all things, by Whom also HE made the worlds;
[Heb 1:1, 2]
Divine prophecy edifies and inspires one to entrust their holistic being to Yahweh and HIS Christ. The Lord Jesus said,
Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in house.
Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
[Mt 5:14-16]
Apostle Paul writes,
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
[Eph 4:29]
While it is to be closely monitored and controlled within Christian Assemblies, divine prophesy is not to be despised. Apostle Paul writes,
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
If anything, be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
And spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
Wherefore, brethren, covet <or desire> to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Let all things be done decently and in order.
[I Cor 14:27-32, 39, 40]
As with all divine and spiritual gifts, unknown tongues and prophecy are rooted and to be exercised in divine love. Apostle Paul writes,
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
Charity never faileth: but where there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
[I Cor 13:1, 2, 8-10, 13]
